How close is the nearest PG near SRM University Chennai?

Not close. Hostel360 has zero listings within 1, 2, 3, 5 or 8 km of the SRM Kattankulathur campus as of October 2026. The nearest 12 start at 9.4 km in Vandalur and run to 12.3 km in West Tambaram. Seven of those 12 are men-only, two are women-only and three are co-ed.

SRM gives its address as SRM Nagar, Kattankulathur 603 203, Chengalpattu District, and its own travel note for visiting teams places the campus midway between Tambaram and Chengalpattu, on GST Road, in front of Potheri railway station. We measured every Hostel360 listing from the campus map pin in a straight line. Road distance is always longer.

Distance band (straight line)ListingsGirls-onlyBoys-onlyCo-edMedian Google rating (rated listings)

Within 3 km0000n/a
Within 8 km0000n/a
Nearest 12 listings, 9.4 to 12.3 km122734.3 (12 rated)

The 2 km and 5 km bands are also zero. The median rating comes from the 12 Google ratings sorted low to high: the sixth and seventh are both 4.3, so (4.3 + 4.3) ÷ 2 = 4.3. Five of the 12 are within 11 km. Women have the fewest options: the first women-only listing is 10.7 km out in New Perungalathur.

Search in two rings. Potheri and Guduvanchery, right beside the campus, have rooms and shared flats you will mostly find on foot, with no Hostel360 listings yet. Vandalur, Perungalathur and Tambaram, 9 to 12 km up GST Road, are where our listings are, at the cost of a daily train or bus ride.

Potheri and Guduvanchery: closest, but unlisted

Potheri station is the one SRM points visitors to, and Guduvanchery is the stop before it on the Chengalpattu line, according to SRM's station-by-station route sheet. Living here means a walk or short auto to class. The catch: none of these rooms are on Hostel360 as of October 2026, so there are no ratings to compare. Visit in person, and read our step-by-step guide to finding a PG in India before you start knocking on doors.

Vandalur, Perungalathur and Peerkankaranai: the nearest listed stock

Reading addresses rather than area labels, our nearest 12 break down like this: 2 in Vandalur (pincode 600048) at about 9.4 km, one of them on GST Road itself; 5 in New Perungalathur, Perungalathur and Peerkankaranai (600063) between 10.6 and 11.4 km; 1 more at 10.95 km with no address on file; 1 in Melakottaiyur at 12.05 km; and 3 in West Tambaram and Mudichur Road (600045) between 12.0 and 12.3 km. That adds up to 2 + 5 + 1 + 1 + 3 = 12. Vandalur and Perungalathur both have stations on SRM's route sheet, so start your shortlist there.

Tambaram: more choice, longer ride

Tambaram is where some suburban services from Chennai Beach end, so you get more trains and buses to choose from than at the smaller stations. SRM's route sheet sends bus riders from West Tambaram on route 500 or 118 towards Chengalpattu, getting off at Potheri. Browse the current rooms on our Tambaram PGs and hostels page, and see how Tambaram compares with the rest of the city in our best areas for students in Chennai guide.

What does the Tambaram to Potheri commute cost each month?

On Southern Railway's AC EMU, Tambaram to Potheri should cost about Rs 1,760 a month for 22 class days: Rs 40 each way, twice a day. If the counter puts the trip in the next slab up, it becomes Rs 2,640. Ordinary second class trains cost far less, but we could not retrieve an official fare table for them.

Southern Railway's April 2025 AC EMU announcement lists Tambaram, Perungalathur, Guduvancheri and Potheri Halt on the Chennai Beach to Chengalpattu run. It prices single journeys by distance: Rs 35 up to 10 km, Rs 40 for 11 to 15 km, Rs 60 for 16 to 25 km. It does not give a Tambaram to Potheri distance, so we worked it out from official figures:

  • Chennai Beach to Chengalpattu: 60 km (Southern Railway)
  • Chennai Beach to Tambaram: 30 km (Southern Railway)
  • Chengalpattu to Potheri: 15 km (SRM's travel note)
  • Tambaram to Potheri: 60 minus 30 minus 15 = about 15 km

That sits at the top of the Rs 40 slab. Monthly cost: Rs 40 x 2 trips x 22 class days = Rs 1,760. At the Rs 60 slab it is 60 x 2 x 22 = Rs 2,640. In the launch timetable, one morning train left Tambaram at 07:43 and reached Potheri Halt at 08:01, an 18 minute ride. Southern Railway revised those timings in May 2025, and AC trains are few, so check the current schedule. Ordinary season ticket holders cannot board AC EMUs.

The other option is SRM's own bus. Its transport page lists a fee of Rs 75,000, which is 75,000 ÷ 12 = Rs 6,250 a month, from "limited parts of Chennai city". That is about 3.5 times the AC EMU figure, though it drops you inside campus.

Is the SRM KTR hostel cheaper than living outside?

Often, yes. The cheapest first-year SRM hostel bed costs Rs 1,18,000 a year with mess, about Rs 9,833 a month. Add Rs 1,760 of AC EMU fares to an outside room and the PG must cost under about Rs 8,070 a month, with food, before it saves you money.

SRM's hostel directorate says the KTR campus has 14 men's blocks holding about 7,500 students and 7 women's blocks holding about 4,000. Bookings run online through the student portal. The first-year boys circular and first-year girls circular for 2026-27 set these totals, hostel fee plus a Rs 73,000 mess fee:

SRM KTR option, 2026-27Per yearPer month (÷ 12)
Kaari (boys) or Senbagam (girls), non-AC, common washroomRs 1,18,000About Rs 9,833
Meenakshi (girls) or Adhiyaman (boys), non-AC, attached, 3 sharingRs 1,53,000Rs 12,750
Adhiyaman (boys), AC, attached, 3 sharingRs 2,33,000About Rs 19,417
N Block (boys), AC, attached, 2 sharingRs 2,73,000Rs 22,750

Over 10 months, if you go home for summer, the cheapest bed is 1,18,000 ÷ 10 = Rs 11,800 a month. The break-even sum for an outside room: Rs 9,833 minus Rs 1,760 commute = Rs 8,073. Hostel360 has no rent figures for these listings, so check current prices on the Tambaram listings themselves.

One rule changes that maths. The SRM hostel policy says there is no refund if you leave the hostel mid-year, and the second-year booking notice repeats that fees once paid are not refunded. A PG with one month's notice is more flexible.

What should you check before paying for a room near SRM?

Check five things on the spot: the written agreement, how the deposit comes back, police verification, the gate closing time and whether breakfast is served early enough. For SRM KTR the last one decides your day, because the first engineering bus spell reaches campus at 7:40 AM.

  1. Time the morning, not the map. Engineering Spell I buses arrive at 7:40 AM on SRM's transport page. From Vandalur or Perungalathur you add a walk, a train and another walk on top of an early class, so a mess that serves breakfast at 7:30 AM is useless to you.
  2. Read the agreement for notice and lock-in. Our guide to what to check in a PG rental agreement lists the clauses. Ask whether you can leave at the end of a semester without losing a month's rent.
  3. Get the deposit refund date in writing. If you plan to leave after end-semester exams, write that month into the agreement so the owner cannot hold the deposit into the next term.
  4. Ask about police verification. A careful owner will ask for your ID and file it; see our police verification guide for PG residents.
  5. Match the gate time to the last train. If you take evening labs or a late train back from Potheri, a 9 PM gate will not work. Get the closing time in writing.
  6. Visit after rain. Walk the lane from the PG to the station after a heavy shower to see whether it floods, and whether the walk to the platform is lit at night.

Your next step for SRM KTR housing

Book an SRM hostel bed first if the budget fits, since booking opens on the student portal on a fixed date and runs block by block. As a backup, shortlist two or three rooms in Vandalur or Perungalathur from our Tambaram listings, then do a weekday trial run to Potheri before you pay anything. That is the honest way to judge any PG near SRM University Chennai today. For how Chennai compares with other student cities, read our student accommodation guide to Indian cities.

Frequently asked questions

No. As of October 2026 Hostel360 has no listings within 8 km of the SRM KTR campus, measured in a straight line. The nearest two are in Vandalur at about 9.4 km, both men-only. Most of the other ten nearest sit in Perungalathur, Peerkankaranai and West Tambaram.
On SRM's 2026-27 fee circulars, the lowest on-campus option for first-year students is Rs 1,18,000 a year including the Rs 73,000 mess fee: Kaari for boys and Senbagam for girls. That is Rs 1,18,000 / 12, or about Rs 9,833 a month. An off-campus 7-sharing block for boys costs Rs 1,10,000.
Southern Railway's AC EMU charges Rs 40 for an 11 to 15 km trip. Tambaram to Potheri works out to about 15 km, so 22 class days cost Rs 40 x 2 x 22 = Rs 1,760. If the counter charges the 16 to 25 km slab, it is Rs 60 x 2 x 22 = Rs 2,640.
Yes, both sit on the same suburban line, with Guduvanchery one station before Potheri and Potheri station right in front of the campus on GST Road. Hostel360 had no listings there as of October 2026, so you will need to find rooms on foot and check them carefully.
SRM's transport page lists a bus fee of Rs 75,000, about Rs 6,250 a month over 12 months, with seats subject to availability and AC buses running from limited parts of Chennai. Ask the transport office whether a route stops near your PG before paying, because the fee is not refunded.
