Finding a PG near Anna University Chennai is harder right at the gate than a few streets out: on Hostel360, as of October 2026, only 2 listings sit within 1 km of the College of Engineering Guindy (CEG) map pin, but 139 sit within 3 km. Most are in Little Mount, Saidapet, T Nagar and Adyar. This guide uses our own listing data, the official Chennai Metro fare table and the CEG hostel fee sheet to show where to look and what each option costs.
Browse every current room on our Chennai hostels and PGs page, which had 1,554 listings when we pulled this data. It covers the Guindy campus of CEG, Alagappa College of Technology (ACT) and the School of Architecture and Planning (SAP). Anna University lists four constituent colleges, and the fourth, MIT, sits on its own campus in Chromepet, so it is not covered here.

Why the 1 km circle is almost empty
The 1 km circle holds just 0.2% of our listings within 8 km (2 of 901). The circle covers 3.14 sq km (pi x 1 x 1), so it has 2 ÷ 3.14 = 0.64 listings per sq km. The ring from 1 to 2 km covers 9.42 sq km and holds 46 listings, or 4.9 per sq km. The ring from 2 to 3 km covers 15.71 sq km with 91 listings, 5.8 per sq km. From 3 to 5 km it rises to 449 listings, 8.9 per sq km.
The land explains it. Much of the circle is the university's own grounds, and across Sardar Patel Road the city gives way to institutional and protected land. IIT Madras alone occupies a 2.5 sq km (617 acre) campus that was carved out of Guindy National Park, and the park itself is a 2.70 sq km protected area. Those two add up to 5.2 sq km, about 1.7 times the whole 1 km circle. The Lok Bhavan estate, formerly Raj Bhavan, gave nearly 625 acres to the Forest Department in 1958 and 88 more in 1977 for the park. None of that land rents rooms, so supply starts at the residential edge on the Saidapet and Kotturpuram side.
Our nearest listing is 0.82 km away in Little Mount; the nearest girls-only one is at 1.13 km and the nearest boys-only one at 1.36 km.
Which areas near the Guindy campus have the most PGs and ladies hostels?

| Pincode and locality (from listing addresses) | Listings within 3 km of CEG | What it means for a CEG, ACT or SAP student |

| 600015 Saidapet, Little Mount | 44 | 9 of our 12 nearest listings; walkable or one short bus stage |

Little Mount and Saidapet. This is the closest belt, and our Saidapet PG and hostel listings are the first place to look. Of the 12 listings closest to the CEG pin, 9 carry a 600015 address, on streets including Lourd Doss Grotto Road and Velachery Main Road. All 12 fall within 1.48 km: 5 co-ed, 5 girls-only and 2 boys-only.
Kotturpuram. Two girls-only listings sit about 1.2 km away in Kotturpuram (600085). With the Little Mount one at 1.13 km, they are the shortest walks we have for anyone wanting a ladies hostel near Anna University.
Guindy itself. Our Guindy hostel listings are worth a scan, but only 6 listings within 3 km of CEG carry Guindy's 600032 pincode, despite the campus sharing the Guindy name. Our best areas for students in Chennai guide compares these neighbourhoods citywide.
Closer is not worse on ratings: 25 of 48 rated listings within 2 km score 4 or more, against 59 of 136 within 3 km. Of the 139 listings within 3 km, 112 tag WiFi but only 4 tag food, so ask about meals.

What does the metro or bus to CEG Guindy cost each month?
From T Nagar, Nandanam or Teynampet, the metro to Little Mount costs Rs 20 a trip, or Rs 16 with CMRL's 20% discount. Over 22 class days that is Rs 880, or Rs 704 with the discount. From Saidapet or Little Mount, walking is free and usually quicker than any ride.
The fares below come from the CMRL fare table, updated 9 October 2026. The discounted column applies to the Store Value Pass online QR (20% off every journey, recharge from Rs 50, valid 5 years). Monthly cost = one-way fare x 2 x 22 class days.
| Trip | Full fare | With 20% discount | Monthly, full fare | Monthly, discounted |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nandanam to Little Mount | Rs 20 | Rs 16 | 20 x 2 x 22 = Rs 880 | 16 x 2 x 22 = Rs 704 |
| Teynampet or AG-DMS to Little Mount | Rs 20 | Rs 16 | Rs 880 | Rs 704 |
| Ashok Nagar to Little Mount (change of line) | Rs 30 | Rs 24 | 30 x 2 x 22 = Rs 1,320 | 24 x 2 x 22 = Rs 1,056 |
| Ashok Nagar to Guindy | Rs 20 | Rs 16 | Rs 880 | Rs 704 |
| Saidapet to Little Mount | Rs 10 | Rs 8 | Rs 440 | 8 x 2 x 22 = Rs 352 |
The metro does not stop at the gate. Little Mount station is 1.34 km from the CEG pin in a straight line, Saidapet station 1.46 km and Guindy station 2.58 km, measured on OpenStreetMap station points. Kotturpuram MRTS station is 1.29 km away. From Ashok Nagar, riding to Guindy saves Rs 10 a trip but leaves you nearly twice as far from campus. From Saidapet, Rs 352 a month for one stop saves almost no walking.
Buses suit short hops from Adyar. The MTC ordinary fare table runs from Rs 5 for 1 stage to Rs 10 for 6 stages: a 3-stage ride costs 7 x 2 x 22 = Rs 308 a month, a 6-stage ride 10 x 2 x 22 = Rs 440. MTC's College Student Concession Ticket costs Rs 120 for 2 stages up to Rs 280 for 10, sold at counters including Saidapet, Adyar and T Nagar. Its validity is not stated online, so ask at the counter.
CEG hostel or outside PG: which works out cheaper?
The latest CEG hostel fee table puts a UG resident at Rs 70,175 a year in recurring charges, about Rs 5,848 a month with the mess advance included. Hostel360 shows no verified rents near Guindy, so check live prices on our Chennai page before you compare. The hostel also carries a strict in-time.
CEG's Engineering College Hostels house about 4,500 students in separate boys and girls blocks. The 2025-26 UG hostel fee table was still the latest online in October 2026:
- One time at admission: 600 + 600 + 3,000 + 1,500 = Rs 5,700, of which the Rs 3,000 mess deposit and Rs 1,500 block deposit (Rs 4,500) are refundable.
- Every semester: 10,800 residential service charge + 4,950 block maintenance + 17,500 mess advance = Rs 33,250.
- Every year: Rs 3,675 for electricity, water and room rent.
- Yearly recurring total: 3,675 + 2 x 33,250 = Rs 70,175, so 70,175 ÷ 12 = about Rs 5,848 a month.
- Without the mess advance: 3,675 + 2 x (10,800 + 4,950) = Rs 35,175 a year, or Rs 2,931 a month for the room side alone.
The mess advance is not a fixed food price: the rules set monthly mess charges by a dividing system, so the real bill can differ. SAP runs a separate hostel with 43 rooms for 174 students, with compulsory mess meals, and ACT lists its own hostel section on the ACT website.
Availability matters as much as price. When we checked in October 2026, the CEG HostelConnect portal said hostel admission is currently not available for PG boys students, while UG first-year admissions opened on 27 July 2026. M.E. and M.Tech boys therefore start outside. A PG also frees you from the 9.30 pm (boys) and 8.30 pm (girls) in-time and the ban on residents riding two-wheelers inside campus, at the cost of rent plus a commute.
Checks before you pay for a room near Guindy
Use this list at every visit, in addition to our step-by-step guide to finding a PG in India:
- Walk the route at 8 am. Department hours run 8:30 am to 4:45 pm. Time the walk to your department, not just to the Sardar Patel Road gate.
- Match mess timing to an 8:30 start. Only 4 of 139 listings within 3 km tag food. If breakfast is served at 8, you will skip it most days.
- Check the lane after rain. Visit after a heavy shower if you can, ask neighbours whether the street floods, and check ground-floor rooms for damp walls before you pick one.
- Get the gate time in writing. Late lab work or a SAP studio deadline can keep you on campus past dinner. A PG gate that shuts earlier than the hostel's 9.30 pm removes one of the main reasons to live outside.
- Read the agreement and deposit clause. Notice period, deposit refund date and deductions should be on paper. Our PG rental agreement checklist lists the clauses to look for.
- Confirm police verification. Ask whether the owner has completed tenant verification for current residents; our explainer on police verification for PGs and hostels covers what to hand over.
- Plan for semester exam weeks. Ask about quiet hours and test the WiFi speed yourself; a WiFi tag says nothing about speed.
