How far are PGs from IIT Madras?
Closer than the 1 km number suggests. Hostel360 has 1 listing within 1 km of the campus centre, 60 within 2 km and 214 within 3 km, as of October 2026. The jump happens because IIT Madras is a 617-acre campus, so the first kilometre from its centre is mostly campus forest.
The IIT Madras campus overview describes a campus carved from the Guindy National Park, entered from Sardar Patel Road. We measured straight-line distance from the campus centroid to each listing's map pin; road distance is longer and depends on your gate.

Where to look for a PG near IIT Madras, gate by gate
Pick the gate first, then the area. IIT Madras has three gates: Main, Velachery and Taramani. Velachery (pincode 600042) and Tharamani (600113) hold our closest listings and suit the southern and eastern gates. Adyar, Kotturpuram, Saidapet and Guindy suit the Main Gate on Sardar Patel Road.
All three gates are named on the IIT Madras Security Section vehicle pass form, and an IIT Madras Ocean Engineering visitor page says four-wheelers are not allowed through the Velachery Gate. The overview puts Gajendra Circle about 2.5 km inside the Main Gate, with the academic and hostel zones beyond it, so a lab past Gajendra Circle can be quicker to reach from Velachery than from Adyar.

How much does the bus ride to IIT Madras cost each month?
Between about Rs 264 and Rs 396 a month on MTC ordinary buses for 22 days of return trips, depending on distance. A 3-stage ride costs Rs 7 one way, so 7 x 2 x 22 = Rs 308. A monthly pass only pays off once you ride six days a week or travel 5 stages or more.
The fares come from the MTC stage-wise fare list, effective 29 January 2018, and the MTC Monthly Commuter Season Ticket page, which says a stage is roughly 2 km. Interns and project staff often keep lab hours on Saturdays too, so we show 26 days as well.

At 3 stages on a five-day week, single tickets win: Rs 308 against Rs 320. On a six-day week the pass saves 364 minus 320 = Rs 44. At 5 stages the pass saves Rs 26 on 22 days and Rs 98 on 26 days. Passes run from the 16th to the 15th and are sold at counters including Adyar, Velachery and Thiruvanmiyur.
From the Main Gate you still have about 2.5 km to Gajendra Circle on the campus buses that the institute says link the gate with the academic and hostel zones. A PG near the Velachery Gate can cut both the fare and that inside leg.
Is an IIT Madras hostel room cheaper than a PG outside?
For an enrolled scholar, usually yes. The Jan to May 2026 circular lists Rs 19,750 a semester in hostel fees for 2024 to 2025 batch M.Tech, M.S and PhD scholars. That works out to about Rs 3,292 a month before food, or about Rs 7,942 with a veg mess. Visitors should weigh that against outside rents.
The IIT Madras Hostel Fees Circular for Jan to May 2026, dated 23 December 2025, adds up admission Rs 500, Establishment A Rs 12,000, Establishment B Rs 1,500, RO water Rs 500, waste disposal Rs 250 and utility Rs 5,000 to reach Rs 19,750 for the non-vacation category. New admissions pay Rs 24,750, including a Rs 5,000 refundable deposit.
The math: Rs 19,750 x 2 semesters = Rs 39,500 a year, and 39,500 ÷ 12 = about Rs 3,292 a month. The veg mess is Rs 148 plus 5% GST, or Rs 155 a day, so 155 x 30 = Rs 4,650. Total: about Rs 7,942 a month, assuming next semester's rates match.

What should you check before paying for a room near IIT Madras?
Check the gate, the food and the paperwork. Confirm which gate your lab is nearest to and whether the PG serves meals that fit your lab hours. Get the agreement, deposit terms and police verification in writing, and for a short internship fix the minimum stay and notice period first.
- Walk the route from PG to gate. Time it at the hour you will leave, including the stretch inside campus.
- Do not plan to cut through campus by vehicle. The security form says a vehicle pass is valid for one gate only, the campus must not be used for transit between gates, and the speed limit is 20 km/h.
- Match the mess to your lab day. Late experiments often run past a PG's dinner cut-off, so ask when it ends.
- Ask about the last monsoon. Ask whether the street or ground floor took water in Chennai's last heavy rain.
- Fix the minimum stay for short visits. Interns and visiting researchers need the lock-in, notice period and refund date in writing; see what to check in a PG rental agreement.
- Ask about curfew and verification. Families and aspirants studying late should know the gate-closing time, and everyone needs police verification for PG residents.
