The same catchment serves Presidency University at 86/1 College Street and Medical College Kolkata at 88 College Street, so you share the room market with their students. Browse every current option on our Kolkata hostels and PGs page, which had 1,087 listings when we pulled the data.

How far are PGs from the Calcutta University College Street campus?
Very close, by Indian city standards. On Hostel360, 52 listings sit within 1 km of the campus and the 12 nearest are all within 0.51 km, measured in a straight line from the map pin. Within 2 km the count rises to 143, and girls-only listings outnumber boys-only ones in every band.
We measured straight-line distance from the University of Calcutta campus at 87/1 College Street (the Asutosh Siksha Prangan) to each listing's map pin. Walking distance through the lanes is longer, so add a margin before you assume a five-minute walk.
| Distance band | Listings | Girls-only | Boys-only | Co-ed | Median Google rating (rated listings) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Within 1 km | 52 | 20 | 18 | 14 | 4.5 (44 rated) |
| Within 2 km | 143 | 63 | 47 | 33 | 4.4 (126 rated) |
| Within 3 km | 214 | 93 | 59 | 62 | 4.4 (188 rated) |
| Within 5 km | 349 | 152 | 88 | 109 | 4.4 (314 rated) |
| Within 8 km | 704 | 273 | 188 | 243 | 4.4 (635 rated) |
Two things stand out. First, 349 of our 1,087 Kolkata listings, or 32%, fall within 5 km of this one campus. Second, ratings near the gate hold up: 40 of the 44 rated listings within 1 km score 4 or more, which is 40 ÷ 44 = 91%. A star rating is not an inspection, though. Several of the closest addresses are institutional hostels rather than open-market PGs, so call before you count on a seat.
Where can you find a PG near College Street Kolkata?
Start with the College Square and Bowbazar lanes south and east of the campus, then the College Street Market and Thanthania side to the north. The largest cluster in our 3 km data is pincode 700006 around Simla and Bidhan Sarani, followed by Baithakkhana and Sealdah in 700009.
We grouped listings within 3 km by the pincode in each address and took neighbourhood names from the addresses themselves:
| Pincode | Listings within 3 km | Neighbourhoods named in the addresses | How you reach campus |
|---|---|---|---|
| 700006 | 56 | Simla, Bidhan Sarani, around Shreemani Market | Walk or a short bus ride down Bidhan Sarani |
| 700009 | 24 | Baithakkhana, Pataldanga, Sealdah side of MG Road | Walk |
| 700014 | 23 | Lebutala, Sankharitola | Walk or Green Line via Sealdah |
| 700012 | 20 | College Square, Bowbazar, Surendralal Pyne Lane | Walk |
| 700007 | 15 | College Street Market, Thanthania | Walk |
| 700004 | 14 | Hatibagan, Shobhabazar, Shyambazar | Blue Line to Central |
| 700016 | 13 | Janbazar, Taltala | Blue Line from Esplanade or a bus |
| 700054 | 13 | Phoolbagan, Narkeldanga | Green Line, Phoolbagan to Sealdah |
Pincode 700006 alone holds 56 of the 214 listings within 3 km, which is 26%. If you want the most choice in one walkable patch, spend a morning there. If you want to be closest, there is no separate College Street page on our site yet, so use the Bowbazar PG and hostel listings, which cover the lanes between the campus and Sealdah. For a wider view of how central and north Kolkata compare with the south, read our guide to the best areas for students in Kolkata.
Food is the weak spot in the listing data. Only 14 of the 214 listings within 3 km tag food, against 180 that tag WiFi. If you plan to eat at a mess near College Street instead, confirm whether the owner lowers the rent for a room without meals.

How much does the metro to College Street cost each month?
Between Rs 220 and Rs 880 a month for most students who ride in, at 22 class days. Fares to Central or Sealdah run from Rs 5 to Rs 20 one way on Metro Railway Kolkata's fare chart. Living within 1 km of campus brings this to zero, but the saving is small next to rent.
Central station on the Blue Line is about 0.48 km from the campus point and Mahatma Gandhi Road station about 0.68 km, both straight-line distances from OpenStreetMap coordinates. On the Green Line, Sealdah station is about 1.18 km away. The fares below come from the Metro Railway Kolkata fare chart, checked in October 2026. The page carries no revision date, so check the fare at the counter before you plan a budget around it.
| Where you live | Metro trip | One-way fare | Monthly cost (fare x 2 x 22) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Girish Park side | Girish Park to Central | Rs 5 | Rs 220 |
| Shyambazar, Hatibagan | Shyambazar to Central | Rs 10 | Rs 440 |
| Phoolbagan, Kankurgachi | Phoolbagan to Sealdah | Rs 10 | Rs 440 |
| Howrah | Howrah to Mahakaran | Rs 10 | Rs 440 |
| Dum Dum | Dum Dum to Central | Rs 15 | Rs 660 |
| Kalighat, Bhawanipore | Kalighat to Central | Rs 15 | Rs 660 |
| Salt Lake Sector V | Sector V to Sealdah | Rs 20 | Rs 880 |
Worked out for a full teaching year of about 10 months: Rs 440 x 10 = Rs 4,400 from Shyambazar, Rs 660 x 10 = Rs 6,600 from Kalighat, and Rs 880 x 10 = Rs 8,800 from Sector V. These figures leave out the walk or auto ride at each end. Mahakaran is roughly 1.3 km from campus, so a Howrah student still has a walk after the train. Compare the yearly figure against the rent gap between a College Square room and one further out, then decide.
Calcutta University hall, Presidency hostel or a private PG?
Apply for a university seat first, because nothing private comes close on price. The University of Calcutta's boarder rules work out to about Rs 140 a month before food. Seats are limited and allotted by committee, so most outstation students still need a PG near College Street Kolkata as a backup.
The University of Calcutta's Rules for Guidance of Boarders list these charges, subject to revision: seat rent of Rs 35 or Rs 40 a month, Rs 10 a month for furniture, Rs 10 for utensils and Rs 80 for electricity. At the higher seat rent:
- Monthly: Rs 40 + Rs 10 + Rs 10 + Rs 80 = Rs 140
- Yearly: Rs 140 x 12 = Rs 1,680, plus an admission fee equal to one month's seat rent, Rs 40, for Rs 1,720
- One-time refundable caution deposit: Rs 300
- Food: charged separately through the hall mess, with no figure in the rules
That Rs 140 is less than a third of the Rs 440 a Shyambazar student spends on metro fares alone. The catch is in the same document: PG halls are reserved for CU postgraduate students, admission runs for one July to June session, the full 12 months is paid in advance, and the evening roll-call is at 10 pm with no nights out between 10 pm and 6 am without written permission.
Presidency is different. Its hostel rules put the boys' hostel, founded in 1886 as the Government Eden Hindu Hostel, at 3 P C Sarkar Street in College Square, with about 150 boarders. The girls' hostel, set up in 1992, is at BF-141, Sector I, Salt Lake, with about 200 boarders. Seats are decided on marks, distance from home and family income, through a yearly call on the Dean of Students' Corner. We found no current hostel fee schedule on Presidency's site, so we do not quote one. If you end up in the Salt Lake girls' hostel, our guide to PGs near IEM and the Salt Lake colleges covers that side of the city.
What should you check before paying for a room near College Street?
Check the paperwork, then the timings. Get a written agreement with deposit and notice terms, confirm police verification, and match the PG's gate time and meal times to your timetable. A Medical College student on late ward duty and a CU arts student with morning lectures need different rules.
- Agreement and deposit. Ask for the deposit amount, the refund date and deductions in writing. Our checklist on what to check in a PG rental agreement lists the clauses.
- Police verification. Ask whether the owner files tenant verification and keep a copy. See our guide to police verification for PGs and hostels.
- Gate time against your day. CU halls take roll at 10 pm. If you are at Medical College Kolkata, ask how the PG handles returns after evening duty, and get the answer in writing.
- Mess timing against classes. If breakfast starts after you must leave, you pay for a meal you will not eat. Ask for the exact serving times.
- Exam season. CU hall rules make examinee-boarders clear hall dues before admit cards are issued. In a PG, settle dues and give written notice before your final semester exams so the deposit refund does not clash with them.
- Monsoon walk. You will walk the same lane twice a day through the rains. Visit once after heavy rain if you can, and ask neighbours whether the lane takes water.
Your next step for a College Street room
Apply for your university or Presidency hostel seat the day the notice opens, and shortlist three options for a PG near College Street Kolkata in parallel: one in College Square or Bowbazar, one around Simla in 700006, and one near a metro station from the fare table. Compare current rents on the Kolkata hostels and PGs page. If you are weighing a campus in the south of the city, our guide to PGs near Jadavpur University shows how that market differs, and the student accommodation guide to Indian cities puts Kolkata next to other college cities.
