How far is a PG near IEM Salt Lake from the campus?
Most options are 1 to 2 km away, not next door. Hostel360 has 9 listings within 1 km of IEM's Gurukul campus and 95 within 2 km, so 86 sit in that second kilometre. The median Google rating stays at 4.3 in every band up to 5 km, so going further out costs nothing on ratings.

Studying at Techno Main Salt Lake instead?
Techno Main Salt Lake, formerly Techno India, gives its address as EM-4/1, Sector V, near Wipro More and Sector-V Metro Station, in its institute profile on the WBJEEB website. Its GPS point is about 0.8 km in a straight line from our IEM map point, so the bands above also work for anyone looking for a hostel near Techno India Salt Lake. The profile lists hostel seats as "Yes [In Collaboration]", so ask the college which partner hostels it uses before booking a private room.

Sector V and Nayapatti suit students who want to walk to class. It is an office district, so see how the lanes feel after dark as well as in the day. Browse these on our Sector V PG listings. This is the strip most people mean by a PG in Salt Lake Sector 5 for students.
Salt Lake Sector 2 and Karunamoyee are residential blocks of houses rather than office towers, and Karunamoyee has its own Green Line station. See the Salt Lake hostels and PGs page and, for the wider municipal area, the PGs in Bidhannagar page, since many Salt Lake addresses carry the Bidhannagar name.
New Town Action Area I has newer apartment-style PGs. It is close in a straight line but not on the Green Line, so the ride depends on road traffic. Compare it on the New Town PG listings. Our guide to the best areas for students in Kolkata sets these against the rest of the city.
Of the 139 listings within 3 km, 98 are tagged WiFi but only 15 are tagged food, about one in nine. If you need meals, filter for food first.
What does the metro ride to Sector V cost each month?
Salt Lake Sector-V is the Green Line's end station in Salt Lake. Official token fares from there run Rs 5 to Karunamoyee, Rs 10 to the other Salt Lake stations, Rs 20 to Sealdah and Rs 30 to Esplanade and Howrah. Over 22 class days of return trips, that is Rs 220 to Rs 1,320 a month.
The fares below come from the Metro Railway Kolkata fare chart, Green Line table, checked October 2026. The monthly figure is one-way fare x 2 trips x 22 class days.
| From station to Salt Lake Sector-V | One-way fare | Monthly (x 2 x 22) | 10-month academic year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Karunamoyee | Rs 5 | Rs 220 | Rs 2,200 |
| Central Park, City Centre, Bengal Chemical, Salt Lake Stadium | Rs 10 | Rs 440 | Rs 4,400 |
| Phoolbagan, Sealdah | Rs 20 | Rs 880 | Rs 8,800 |
| Esplanade, Mahakaran, Howrah, Howrah Maidan | Rs 30 | Rs 1,320 | Rs 13,200 |
Worked example: a student in a Sector 2 PG who walks to Karunamoyee pays Rs 5 x 2 x 22 = Rs 220 a month. From Sealdah it is Rs 20 x 2 x 22 = Rs 880 a month, or Rs 8,800 over ten months. The chart shows no smart card discount, so these are token fares. New Town has no Green Line station and we found no official road fare table, so we can only say its Action Area I listings fall within 3 km of IEM.
IEM hostel or a PG in Sector V: which costs less?
IEM's 2022 B.Tech admission notice lists Rs 96,000 a year for either the boys' or the girls' hostel, plus Rs 4,000 refundable caution money. That works out to Rs 8,000 a month over 12 months, a figure to hold against any PG quote once you add food, electricity and deposit.
The charge appears in the IEM B.Tech admission notice for 2022, which is the latest hostel figure we found on IEM's site in October 2026. The arithmetic: Rs 96,000 ÷ 12 = Rs 8,000 a month. Your first payment is Rs 96,000 + Rs 4,000 = Rs 1,00,000, of which Rs 4,000 comes back. If you only count a 10-month academic year, the same fee is Rs 9,600 a month. Fees change, so confirm the current rate with the admission office before you compare.
Hostel360 listings near IEM do not carry prices, so we do not quote a PG rent here. To compare a PG near IEM Salt Lake with the hostel, ask for the monthly rent, what it includes (meals, electricity, laundry) and the deposit terms, then add the metro cost above. A Karunamoyee PG adds Rs 220 a month in fares; a Sector V PG within walking distance adds nothing.
| Cost line | IEM hostel (2022 notice) | Outside PG |
|---|---|---|
| Yearly charge | Rs 96,000 | Ask: rent x 12 |
| Per month (12 months) | Rs 8,000 | Quoted rent |
| Upfront refundable amount | Rs 4,000 caution money | Ask: deposit amount and refund date |
| Travel to class | Depends on hostel location; ask IEM | Rs 0 (walk) to Rs 440 a month (Rs 10 metro fare) |

What should you check before paying for a Sector V PG?
Check the things that differ in Sector V: how the lane feels after office hours, monsoon waterlogging, food that suits a college timetable rather than an office shift, and a written agreement with deposit terms. Visit once on a weekday morning and once after dark before you hand over any money.
- Walk the route at night. Walk from the PG gate to the nearest main road after 9 pm, especially in the Nayapatti and Mahishbathan lanes.
- Ask about the monsoon. Ask the owner and current residents whether the lane or ground floor took water in the last rains, and look for water marks on the walls.
- Match mess timing to your timetable. Sector V PGs also house office workers, so meal times may follow office shifts. Ask your department for the first-period time and check breakfast is served before you must leave.
- Check the curfew against lab and exam days. Ask what happens if a lab, fest or project review runs late, and whether the gate rule changes during semester exams.
- Read the agreement before paying. It should name the rent, deposit, notice period and refund date. Our PG rental agreement checklist covers the clauses to look for.
- Get police verification done. Ask the owner to submit your tenant verification and keep a copy. See our police verification guide for PGs and hostels for the documents.
- Confirm what "co-ed" means. 50 of the 95 listings within 2 km are co-ed; ask whether floors are separated by gender.
