How far are PGs from CUSAT in Kalamassery?

Very close, if you count straight-line distance. Hostel360 has 38 listings within 1 km of the campus point, 104 within 2 km and 396 within 5 km. Rooms close in split evenly between women-only and men-only, and the median Google rating stays at 4.4 or 4.5 in every band, data checked October 2026.

CUSAT's About page places the university in Thrikkakara, Kochi, with 9,000+ students. We measured from one map point on the main campus to each listing's map pin. Road distance is longer, and the campus is large, so your own department may be a longer walk.

Within 5 km396177164554.4 (381 rated)

Two things stand out. First, 704 of our 1,071 Kochi listings (704 ÷ 1,071 = 65.7%) sit within 8 km of CUSAT. Second, 30 of the 38 within 1 km are rated 4.0 or above, so 8 are not; among the 12 closest, ratings run from 2.3 to 5.0.

What does the metro ride to CUSAT cost each month?

From Kalamassery or Pathadipalam the ride is Rs 10 each way, about Rs 440 a month. From Edappally it is Rs 20, about Rs 880. From Kaloor or MG Road, the Kochi Metro student pass at Rs 1,100 for 50 trips is cheaper than single tickets by Rs 220 to Rs 660 a month.

Cochin University station sits about 0.88 km in a straight line from our campus point, going by its OpenStreetMap location. Fares come from the Kochi Metro fare chart, checked October 2026. We assume 22 class days and one return trip a day: one-way fare x 2 x 22.

Board atFare to Cochin UniversitySingle tickets per monthBetter buy
Kalamassery or PathadipalamRs 1010 x 2 x 22 = Rs 440Tickets
Edappally or PalarivattomRs 2020 x 2 x 22 = Rs 880Tickets
Kaloor or Town HallRs 3030 x 2 x 22 = Rs 1,320Pass, saves Rs 220
MG Road or Ernakulam SouthRs 4040 x 2 x 22 = Rs 1,760Pass, saves Rs 660
VyttilaRs 5050 x 2 x 22 = Rs 2,200Pass, saves Rs 1,100

The break-even is Rs 30 because the 1-month student pass works out to 1,100 ÷ 50 = Rs 22 a trip, and your 44 trips fit inside its 50. The 3-month pass is 3,000 ÷ 150 = Rs 20 a trip: from Kaloor, 3 x 1,320 = Rs 3,960 in tickets, so it saves Rs 960. KMRL limits the pass to full-time students at Ernakulam district institutions, aged up to 30.

CUSAT hostel or a PG near CUSAT: which fits you?

If your home is more than 25 km away, apply for the CUSAT hostel first: it is the only option tied to the university's rules on mess, safety and gate times. Students living closer get a seat only if rooms remain, so a PG near CUSAT is the realistic plan for them.

The CUSAT hostels office runs 14 hostels, 8 for boys and 6 for girls, and took 2026 applications through the student portal until 7 June 2026. The university does not publish a fee schedule on that site, so we compare rules rather than rupees. The rule book is the Rules for University Hostels 2024, issued with a July 2025 order:

What should you check before paying for a room near CUSAT?

Visit in person, ideally after rain and in the evening, and get every money and timing term in writing before you pay. The checks below are tuned to CUSAT's yearly hostel cycle, the metro corridor and Kalamassery's lanes, so a room that looks fine on a dry afternoon does not surprise you later.

  • Written agreement. Rent, notice period and your exit terms if a CUSAT hostel seat comes through mid-year. See our rental agreement checklist.
  • Deposit terms. Refund timeline and deductions in writing; pay by UPI or bank transfer.
  • Police verification. Ask whether the owner files tenant verification with the local police, and keep a copy. See our police verification guide.
  • Gate time. If you have late labs or library nights before exams, compare the closing time with the 11:00 PM university hostel rule.
  • Mess timing. Breakfast must come before your first class. No kitchen? Find the nearest mess on your walk to campus.
  • Monsoon check. Walk the lane after heavy rain: water on the stairs, damp walls, and whether the walk to Cochin University station stays usable.
  • Summer months. CUSAT hostels close for the vacation, but a PG may charge for May and June. Ask about a reduced holding rent.
  • Recent reviews. Near campus, ratings run from 2.3 to 5.0, so read the newest reviews.

Frequently asked questions

Hostel360 lists 38 PGs and hostels within 1 km of the CUSAT campus point in straight-line distance, data checked October 2026: 15 women-only, 15 men-only and 8 co-ed. The 12 closest are all under half a kilometre away, mostly in South Kalamassery.
Cochin University station is the nearest, about 0.88 km in a straight line from our campus point, so expect a slightly longer walk by road. Kalamassery and Pathadipalam stations are each about 1.6 km away, and every one of these three is a Rs 10 ride to Cochin University.
Only if your one-way fare is Rs 30 or more. The 1-month pass costs Rs 1,100 for 50 trips, or Rs 22 a trip. From Kaloor, 22 class days of Rs 30 tickets cost Rs 1,320, so the pass saves Rs 220. From Edappally, tickets cost Rs 880, less than the pass.
Probably not in the first round. The CUSAT hostel rules make students living more than 25 km away eligible, and those within 25 km get a room only when no other eligible student is waiting. First-year allotment goes by concession category, then distance, then entrance rank.
CUSAT hostel residents must be back by 11:00 PM under the university hostel rules. Private PGs in Kalamassery and Thrikkakara set their own gate times, so ask for the closing time in writing, and check whether a late lab or library night needs prior permission.
