If you can get a COEP hostel seat, take it: the college's 2025-26 hostel notice for second-year, third-year and final-year B.Tech students sets the fee at ₹45,000 per student for two semesters (COEP hostel notice, 2025-26). If you can't, the closest PGs are in Shivajinagar, under a kilometre from the gate, where branded co-living starts at ₹17,799 a month (Stanza Living Shivaji Nagar, as listed, Oct 2026). For lower rents, compare Karve Nagar, where Stanza lists rooms at ₹10,299 to ₹14,499 (Stanza Living, 2026), and the smaller PGs in Deccan and the old peths.
Key Takeaways
- COEP's 2025-26 hostel fee for SY, TY and final-year B.Tech is ₹45,000 per student for two semesters, plus refundable deposits of ₹10,000 (hostel) and ₹7,000 (mess).
- That fee is less than three months' rent at the cheapest Stanza Living room listed in Shivaji Nagar.
- As of October 2026, Hostel360 lists 277 PGs and hostels within 3 km of COEP (133 for women, 103 for men, 41 co-ed), but only 21 within 1 km.
- Shivajinagar has the most nearby options (74 listings, nearest 0.4 km), followed by Deccan and the peths within 2 km.
- The nearest metro is Shivaji Nagar on the Purple Line. Change at District Court for the Aqua Line.
A heritage campus in the middle of the city
COEP Technological University sits on Wellesley Road, Shivajinagar (411005). It was founded in July 1854 and is commonly described as India's third-oldest engineering institute, after Guindy (1794) and Roorkee (1847). It became a unitary state technological university on 21 June 2022 (Wikipedia).
That central, old-city location shapes your housing search. You aren't choosing between suburbs. You're choosing between dense, established neighbourhoods a short walk or ride from the gate, with the river on one side. The college's Boat Club, set up in 1928 on the Mula river, holds its annual Regatta in March, per COEP's Boat Club page. If you're planning early-morning rowing practice, living within walking distance matters even more.
The official hostel: what ₹45,000 buys, and who it covers
The 2025-26 hostel admission notice for SY, TY and final-year B.Tech lists ₹45,000 per student for two semesters. On top of that are refundable deposits: ₹10,000 for the hostel and ₹7,000 for the mess. Read the notice for exactly what the fee covers before you compare it with a PG.
Even so, the gap is large. The cheapest room Stanza Living lists in Shivaji Nagar, a women's quad at Boulder House, starts at ₹17,799 a month (Oct 2026). Three months there costs more than a full year's hostel fee.
Who should still plan for a PG
Notice who that document covers. First-year B.Tech, M.Tech and PhD students should look for the notice for their own year and programme on the COEP website rather than assume the same fee or rules. And because allotment can come close to the start of term, line up a PG backup anyway. Pune's private supply is stretched: Punekar News reported on 9 June 2026 that the city takes in about 2.5 lakh outstation students a year against roughly 1,000 private hostels.
Where the PGs are: Shivajinagar, Deccan and the old peths
As of October 2026, Hostel360 lists 21 PGs and hostels within 1 km of COEP, 277 within 3 km and 544 within 5 km. Women-only listings lead within 3 km (133), ahead of men-only (103) and co-ed (41). Most of the supply sits in a tight ring of central neighbourhoods.
Shivajinagar: walk to class
Shivajinagar has 74 Hostel360 listings, the nearest about 0.4 km from campus. Close options include Youthville Shivaji Nagar (co-ed, 0.4 km), Aayan Hostel (men, 0.5 km), Varun Boys Hostel (men, 0.7 km), Veera Girls Hostel and PG (women, 0.7 km) and Bett Hostels (co-ed, 0.7 km), all in Shivajinagar.
Branded co-living here is premium. Stanza Living lists Boulder House (women, quad) from ₹17,799, Cosenza House (men, triple) from ₹19,299 and Sarasota House from ₹23,499 a month (as listed, Oct 2026).
Deccan and the peths: a short ride south
Deccan (36 listings, nearest 1.5 km), Narayan Peth (29, nearest 1.5 km), Sadashiv Peth (60, nearest 1.8 km) and Shukrawar Peth (40, nearest 1.9 km) form the old-city belt across the river. We haven't found a reliable sourced rent figure for these areas, so ask at least three PGs for their full monthly cost, including food and electricity, before deciding.
Further out: Gokhalenagar, Yerawada and Kothrud
Yerawada (29 listings, nearest 1.9 km) sits to the east, while Gokhalenagar (51, nearest 2.8 km) is on the SB Road side, where NoBroker shows a boys' PG at ₹5,000 a month without food (Oct 2026). Gokhalenagar also serves Pune University students, so our guide to PGs near SPPU in Ganeshkhind covers it from that side. Kothrud (40 listings, nearest 3.6 km) is the biggest student area to the west, and Stanza Living puts its shared rooms at roughly ₹9,000 to ₹18,000 a month (Sep 2026). Our Kothrud guide for MIT-WPU students goes into those streets in detail.

Getting around: it's the Purple Line, not the Aqua Line
Some older guides put COEP on the Aqua Line. The station near campus is actually Shivaji Nagar on the Purple Line, an underground station that opened on 1 August 2023 and is planned as an interchange with Line 3 (Wikipedia).
The Purple and Aqua lines meet at District Court. That matters if you're weighing Kothrud: you'd ride the Aqua Line in, change at District Court, then take the Purple Line to Shivaji Nagar. It works, but for a daily 8 am lab, a PG you can walk from in Shivajinagar or Deccan is simpler.
What to ask before you sign near COEP
Our listing data shows a pattern worth knowing. Within 3 km of COEP, 233 of 277 Hostel360 listings mention Wi-Fi and 233 mention security, but only 17 mention food and just 1 mentions AC (October 2026). Don't assume meals are part of the deal.
- Is breakfast and dinner included, and is there a separate mess charge?
- What are the deposit, refund terms and notice period, in writing?
- Is electricity billed separately?
- What are the gate timings, and do they work with late labs or Boat Club practice?
- Can you leave mid-year if a hostel seat comes through?
That last question matters most for COEP students, since the official hostel is so much cheaper. For a wider view, browse PGs and hostels across Pune on Hostel360 or read our guide to the best student areas in Pune.
