How SPPU hostel seats are allotted
Savitribai Phule Pune University sits on Ganeshkhind Road (411007). It was founded on 10 February 1949, covers a 411-acre campus, and its main building was built in 1864 as the Bombay Governor's monsoon residence (Wikipedia).
The university runs hostels for both men and women. According to its hostel details page, seats are allotted "strictly on the basis of merit", with department-wise quotas and a separate PhD quota. Circular 117/2026 adds a provision for transgender students.
In practice, that means your chance of a seat depends on your rank within your own department, not on how early you apply. You won't know where you stand until the merit list is out. The only official fee schedule we could find is for 2023-24, so we aren't quoting hostel fees here; ask the hostel office for the current figure.
Why you need a backup either way
Pune's private beds fill quickly. Punekar News reported on 9 June 2026 that the city draws about 2.5 lakh outstation students a year against roughly 1,000 private hostels. If you wait for the merit list before you start looking, the best rooms near Ganeshkhind may already be gone. Shortlist two or three PGs early and ask whether they'll hold a bed for a small token amount.
Why the first kilometre around SPPU is nearly empty
As of October 2026, Hostel360 lists just 1 PG or hostel within 1 km of SPPU, but 140 within 3 km and 382 within 5 km. The 411-acre campus itself takes up much of the land right around you, so the realistic search radius is 1 to 3 km. Plan for a short auto, bus or cycle ride to your department, not a two-minute walk.
The good news is that the 3 km ring is well balanced for both genders: 51 women-only listings, 49 men-only and 40 co-ed. Within 3 km, 117 listings mention Wi-Fi and 117 mention security, but only 11 mention food. Expect to sort out meals yourself unless a PG clearly says otherwise.
Aundh and Sakal Nagar: the west side
Aundh is the closest real PG cluster, with 38 Hostel360 listings and the nearest about 1 km from campus. Nearby options include Vaidya Girls PG (women, 1 km), Jeevprabha Charitable Trust's Jain Ladies Hostel (women, 1.2 km), FOLK Nivas (men, 1.4 km), Sarthi Hostel Aundh (co-ed, 1.6 km) and Sukoon Boys/Girls PG (co-ed, 1.8 km), all in Aundh.
On NoBroker (Oct 2026), a girls' shared room in Aundh is listed at ₹10,000 a month, and a boys' PG in Aundh Gaon with breakfast and dinner at ₹7,500. Sakal Nagar, off Baner Road, has a boys' listing at ₹4,500, the cheapest named area on that page. Pashan, a little further west, adds 30 Hostel360 listings with the nearest about 2.1 km away. These are the streets closest to the university's own boundary. NoBroker lists a boys' shared bed on Ganeshkhind/Vidyapeeth Road at ₹5,500 and a girls' PG in Chatushrungi at ₹8,000 a month (Oct 2026).

Head south-east toward the city and supply jumps. As of October 2026, Hostel360 lists 74 PGs and hostels in Shivajinagar (nearest 2 km from SPPU), 51 in Gokhalenagar (nearest 2.2 km) and 34 in Deccan (nearest 2.6 km). NoBroker shows a boys' PG in Gokhalenagar at ₹5,000 a month without food (Oct 2026).
This side suits students who want city-centre food, colleges and transport, and don't mind a longer ride in. It's also shared territory: Shivajinagar is home turf for COEP students, and Gokhalenagar sits next to Symbiosis's SB Road campus. Metro: what works today and what to check
Nothing operational stops at the SPPU gate yet. The nearest working station is Shivaji Nagar on the Purple Line (Wikipedia), which is useful if you live in Shivajinagar and need to reach other parts of the city, but it won't get you to your department.
Line 3, the Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar line built by PMRDA as a public-private partnership, passes University Chowk. It was expected to open in late 2026, so check its current status before you choose a PG for its metro access. Don't pay extra for a room on the promise of a station that isn't running yet.
A simple plan for the allotment season
- Apply for the hostel and note your department's quota.
- Shortlist two or three PGs in Aundh or Gokhalenagar before the merit list comes out.
- Ask each one what's included, especially food, since few listings near SPPU mention it.
- Do the ride to your department once at class time.
- Get the deposit, refund terms and notice period in writing, and ask whether you can leave if a hostel seat comes through.
