Start your PG search in Kamla Nagar, Vijay Nagar and GTB Nagar, the belts closest to the Yellow Line stations at Vishwavidyalaya and GTB Nagar. As of October 2026, Hostel360 lists 418 PGs and hostels within 3 km of the Faculty of Arts. On cost, listings on NoBroker near Hansraj and Kamla Nagar ran from ₹5,500 to ₹10,500 a month with meals when we checked in October 2026, though some parents report paying far more.
Below: why DU's hostel shortage pushes most outstation freshers into PGs, how the CSAS rounds set your booking window, each neighbourhood along the Yellow Line, and how to check the building itself. You can also browse all PGs and hostels in Delhi.
Key Takeaways
- DU and its colleges have about 7,210 hostel beds in total, so most outstation freshers end up in a PG.
- Time your search to the CSAS rounds. In 2026, round 1 was on 16 July, round 2 on 25 July and round 3 on 8 August, and PG demand peaked from mid-July to August.
- Kamla Nagar sits on the Vishwavidyalaya side. Vijay Nagar, Hudson Lane, Kingsway Camp and Mukherjee Nagar sit on the GTB Nagar side.
- Of the 418 Hostel360 listings within 3 km, 183 are women-only, 121 men-only and 114 co-ed (October 2026).
- Delhi's proposed PG bill names North Campus and Mukherjee Nagar, but it isn't law yet. Check building safety yourself before paying.
DU's hostel shortage, in numbers
DU simply doesn't have enough beds for its outstation students. The university and its colleges have about 7,210 hostel seats between them, India.com reported on 10 September 2026. National Herald (7 September 2026) estimated that DU houses about 1% of its students, compared with 55 to 65% at JNU and 15% at Jamia.
More seats are planned, but not soon enough for this year's freshers. India.com reports 5,544 additional seats in the pipeline, including a 1,000-seat Nirbhaya residence for women, a 1,050-seat studio complex and an Institution of Eminence hostel at the Dhaka Complex in Mukherjee Nagar. Careers360 reported that construction at Dhaka Complex began in September 2025, for 1,436 students (718 boys and 718 girls). None of these projects has a published completion date.
So if you're from outside Delhi with a North Campus seat, plan for a PG and treat any hostel allotment as a bonus.
Time your search to the CSAS rounds
Your booking window is set by DU's Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS), not by the calendar month. For 2026, the CUET UG result was reported on 23 June, CSAS round 1 on 16 July, round 2 on 25 July and round 3 on 8 August. Dates shift every year, so confirm them on DU's official UG admissions portal.
PG demand around North Campus peaks from mid-July through August, when allotted students and their parents arrive in the same lanes in the same few weeks. A simple sequence works well:
- After CUET results: shortlist two belts and save listings. Call owners to understand terms, but don't pay anything yet.
- After round 1 allotment: once you know your college, narrow the search to the belt that suits it (see the college guide below).
- Before paying: visit in person, ideally in the evening, because the lane at night is the lane you'll actually live in.
- If you're upgraded in round 2 or 3: your college may change, so ask about notice periods and refunds before you sign anything.
Rooms in well-run girls' PGs tend to go early, so women students should shortlist before their allotment is final rather than after.
What Hostel360's listings show around North Campus
As of October 2026, Hostel360 lists 11 PGs and hostels within 1 km of the Faculty of Arts, 418 within 3 km and 444 within 5 km. Supply sits in a tight ring: almost everything is in the colonies 1 to 3 km out. Within 3 km, 183 listings are women-only, 121 are men-only and 114 are co-ed, a stronger women's supply than many parents expect.
The amenity data is worth reading closely. Of the 418 listings within 3 km, 336 mention security and 334 mention Wi-Fi, but only 44 mention food, 36 mention AC, 6 mention power backup and 4 mention laundry. Plenty of PGs here do serve meals, so don't read this as "no food". Read it as a prompt to confirm meals, backup power and laundry directly with the owner.
The listings closest to campus include:
- The Guardians Hostel, Civil Lines, co-ed, 0.3 km
- Meghdoot Hostel, University Campus, women, 0.5 km
- Triveni PG, Timarpur, women, 0.6 km
- Mansarowar Hostel, Civil Lines, co-ed, 0.8 km
- Happy Residency Girl's PG, Civil Lines, women, 0.8 km
- Jain Boys PG, Timarpur, men, 0.8 km
The North Campus belt, station by station
North Campus hangs off the Yellow Line. Vishwavidyalaya station serves the campus directly, with Gate 1 facing the DU side. GTB Nagar is the stop for Mukherjee Nagar, Hudson Lane and Kingsway Camp, and Vidhan Sabha is the next station along. Choose your belt by the station you'll actually use every day.
Vishwavidyalaya side: Kamla Nagar, Malka Ganj and Roop Nagar
Kamla Nagar is what most people picture when they say "North Campus PG". The market runs on students: photocopy shops that know your syllabus, chemists open late, food stalls timed around classes, and lanes so full of PG signboards that you can find a room by walking. We list 67 PGs and hostels here, with the nearest about 1.3 km from the Faculty of Arts.
The trade-off is space and quiet. Rooms are small, buildings are tall walk-ups that often lack a lift, and the lane noise rarely stops. If you need silence to study, Kamla Nagar will test you. If you want to walk home after a late society practice, it's hard to beat.
Malka Ganj (27 listings) and Roop Nagar (31 listings) sit on the edges of the same belt. They share Kamla Nagar's access to campus with slightly calmer lanes, which makes them a sensible fallback when the main market is full.
GTB Nagar side: Vijay Nagar, Hudson Lane, Kingsway Camp and Outram Lines
Vijay Nagar is the area seniors quietly recommend. It's close to Hansraj and Kirori Mal, calmer than Kamla Nagar without feeling cut off, and its buildings tend to be a little newer and more organised, with more of them offering a lift. Expect to pay somewhat more than in Kamla Nagar for a comparable room. We list 51 PGs and hostels here, the nearest about 1.1 km from the Faculty of Arts.
GTB Nagar itself (52 listings, nearest 1.1 km) is the pick if you commute. Being steps from the station matters more than being a few minutes closer to class if you've got an internship in central Delhi or family you visit on weekends. Hudson Lane, next to the station, has the densest café strip in North Delhi, which is either a perk or a budget problem depending on your discipline.
Kingsway Camp and Outram Lines adjoin GTB Nagar, and owners often use the names interchangeably. The walk to the Faculty of Arts is longer from here, but shared e-rickshaws run constantly along the route.
Mukherjee Nagar: choose it on purpose
Mukherjee Nagar is the biggest pocket in our data, with 74 listings and the nearest about 1.2 km away. But the neighbourhood is built around competitive-exam coaching. Mess timings assume you're in class until evening, libraries rent seats by the month, and many residents are older UPSC and SSC aspirants.
For an aspirant, or a postgraduate student combining DU with coaching, that focus is the point. For an 18-year-old starting a BA, it can feel isolating, and the daily trip to campus is a bus or e-rickshaw ride rather than a walk. It's also where DU's new Dhaka Complex hostel is being built.
Shakti Nagar and Kalyan Vihar: quieter options
Shakti Nagar (31 listings, nearest 2.1 km) feels like a residential colony rather than a student market. Families live here, lanes are wider, buildings are older and lower, and evenings are noticeably quieter. The catch is location: it's on the Red Line side, near Pratap Nagar and Shastri Nagar stations, so cross-city trips may need an interchange, and the walk to campus is long in Delhi's summer heat.
Kalyan Vihar (35 listings, nearest 1.3 km) works on similar logic: a quieter residential pocket with less of the market buzz. Check the actual route to your college gate before you sign.

Which belt suits which college
North Campus is compact, but the walk from the wrong side of it still adds up over a year. As a starting point:
- Faculty of Arts, Miranda House, St. Stephen's and Hindu: the Vishwavidyalaya side, including Kamla Nagar, Malka Ganj and the Civil Lines and Timarpur listings closest to campus.
- Hansraj, Kirori Mal, SRCC and Ramjas: Kamla Nagar and Vijay Nagar.
- Any college, if you travel across Delhi often: GTB Nagar, Hudson Lane and Kingsway Camp, for the station.
Always walk the route to your own college gate before deciding.
What rent looks like in 2026
There's no reliable area-by-area rent report for North Campus, so treat any figure you see as a snapshot, not an average. Listings on NoBroker near Hansraj and Kamla Nagar, retrieved in October 2026, ranged from ₹5,500 a month for a boys' PG with meals to ₹10,500 for a shared girls' room with meals.
The top end can be much higher. In a September 2026 report, The Tribune quoted one parent's account of Kamla Nagar and University Enclave rooms at ₹14,000 to ₹18,000 a month, or ₹10,000 without food, with three months' rent in advance plus a deposit, often paid in cash. That's one family's experience, but it's a useful warning: insist on written terms and a receipt for every payment.
Check the building, not just the room
On 6 September 2026, a five-storey boys' PG in Satya Niketan collapsed and at least seven people died, according to Wikipedia's summary of the collapse and The Week (29 September 2026). Satya Niketan is near DU's South Campus, not North Campus. Still, the North Campus belt is full of the same kind of tall, crowded student buildings, so it's worth looking hard at any building before you pay.
After the collapse, Delhi proposed a Paying Guest Accommodation Regulation and Welfare Bill. As of 2 October 2026 it has not been passed. According to BusinessToday (9 September 2026) and India TV (8 September 2026), the draft would:
- require PGs to register within 90 days and display a PGRN number
- set area-based rent bands
- cap deposits at three months' rent
- require CCTV and a security guard in PGs with 15 or more students
- allow quarterly inspections
Both reports name Mukherjee Nagar and North Campus among the target areas. Until the bill becomes law, you'll have to do these checks yourself. Look for visible cracks or seepage in walls and ceilings, ask whether floors were added recently, check that the staircase is clear and there's a second way out, look for working fire extinguishers, and see whether CCTV and a guard are actually present.
Questions to ask on the visit
Rent alone tells you little. These questions decide what you'll really pay and how the year goes:
- Is electricity included or metered? A metered room can cost far more in May and June once the cooler or AC runs. Get the per-unit rate in writing.
- What's the food arrangement? Ask whether the kitchen is vegetarian only, whether non-veg costs extra, whether meal charges are reduced when you go home for winter and summer breaks, and whether you can keep a kettle or induction plate.
- How many people share each bathroom on your floor? Ask for the number, not just "attached or shared".
- What's the water pressure on the top floor? Turn on the tap yourself in the bathroom you'd use.
- What are the gate timings, and who enforces them? Girls' PGs here commonly have a fixed entry time, and it's rarely negotiable.
- What are the deposit, notice period and refund terms? Get them in writing, with receipts.
- Is the rent for the academic year or all twelve months? Some owners expect you to vacate over summer. This decides where your luggage lives in June.
Where to start
Shortlist three buildings across two belts, not five in one. Visit them on the same evening so you're comparing like with like, and walk the route to your college gate from each.
