PG near VJTI Matunga: Hostel Seats, Rail Lines and PG Rents (2026)

VJTI's hostel costs far less than any nearby PG, so missing a seat is what sends students into Matunga, Sion, Dadar and Wadala PGs. Here's where to look.

If you didn't get a VJTI hostel seat, look first in Matunga East, Dadar and Sion, where most PG asking rents on NoBroker fall between ₹7,000 and ₹20,000 a month (NoBroker locality pages, October 2026). As of October 2026, Hostel360 lists 64 PGs and hostels within 3 km of VJTI, and most of the closest ones are tagged Dadar. Wadala, on the Harbour line side, is the next place to try. Budget for food separately, because only 4 of those 64 listings mention meals.

Key Takeaways

  • VJTI's 2026-27 first-year hostel fee is ₹22,710 a year in Girls' Hostel A and Boys' Hostels B, C and D. Boys also pay ₹44,000 a year for mess.
  • Seats are limited and allotted on merit and distance, so missing the merit list is the main reason VJTI students end up in PGs.
  • Hostel360 lists 4 places within 1 km, 64 within 3 km and 121 within 5 km of campus (October 2026). Of the 64, 36 are co-ed, 18 are for men and 10 are for women.
  • VJTI sits inside a rail triangle: Matunga (Central), Matunga Road (Western) and King's Circle (Harbour), plus the Aqua Line at Dadar. Pick a PG on a line that reaches campus without a change.
  • Most nearby PGs don't include food, so compare PG rent plus meals against hostel room plus mess.

The VJTI hostel is the cheapest option, if you get a seat

Start with the official hostel, because nothing nearby comes close on price. VJTI's first-year B.Tech hostel admission notice for 2026-27 sets the annual fee at ₹22,710 for Girls' Hostel A and Boys' Hostels B, C and D, and ₹33,250 for Girls' Hostel E. Boys also pay ₹44,000 a year to the Jijabai Mess Committee, in two instalments of ₹22,000.

Add it up and a boy in Block B, C or D pays ₹66,710 for a full year of room and mess. Now compare that with the typical PG band near Matunga of ₹7,000 to ₹20,000 a month. Even at the bottom of that band, ten months in a PG costs ₹70,000 before you've bought a single meal.

The catch is supply. VJTI's hostels page lists boys' blocks, girls' blocks A, B and E, and a hostel for postgraduate boys, but seats are limited and allotted on merit and distance. For 2026-27, first-year applications closed on 10 September 2026 and the merit list came out on 14 September 2026. Rules can change each year, so read the current notice instead of relying on what seniors remember.

Who ends up looking for a PG near Matunga

Because the hostel is so cheap, few students pick a PG over it by choice. The PG search around VJTI is mostly driven by three situations.

  • You missed the merit list. This is the big one. Once the list is out in mid-September, everyone who didn't make it starts hunting in the same week, so rooms within walking distance of Matunga station go first.
  • You're not covered by the first-year notice. Senior, lateral entry and postgraduate students should check which notice and which block applies to them before assuming they'll get a room.
  • You need a room after May. The 2026-27 hostel stay runs until about 31 May 2027. If you've got a summer internship in the city, you'll need short-term housing after that date.

What Hostel360 lists around VJTI (October 2026)

As of October 2026, Hostel360 lists 4 PGs and hostels within 1 km of VJTI, 64 within 3 km and 121 within 5 km. Of the 64 within 3 km, 36 are co-ed, 18 are for men and 10 are for women. Girls have noticeably fewer women-only options, so it pays to start earlier.

Within 5 km, Dadar has by far the most listings (30, the nearest just 0.1 km from campus). Next come Bandra West (15), Lower Parel (12), Chembur (11), Bandra East (10), and Mahim and Prabhadevi (8 each). Places right beside campus are usually tagged Dadar in our data, and that includes VJTI's own new girls' hostel, so search for Dadar as well as Matunga.

The closest listings on Hostel360 are:

Two figures from our amenity data stand out. Wi-Fi and security are listed by 57 of the 64 places within 3 km, but only 4 mention food and only 4 mention AC. Unless a PG puts meals in writing, assume you'll pay for food on top of rent.

Choose your PG by rail line, not by distance

VJTI is unusual because three suburban lines meet around it. Matunga on the Central line is the closest station, while Matunga Road on the Western line and King's Circle on the Harbour line are both nearby. The Aqua Line metro also has a station at Dadar, and since 8 October 2025 the full Aqua Line has run 33.5 km from Aarey JVLR to Cuffe Parade. A PG 5 km away on the right line can beat one 2 km away that needs a change and an auto.

Central line: Sion and Dadar East

Sion is one stop past Matunga toward Kurla, and Dadar is one stop the other way. NoBroker showed 14 Sion PG listings in October 2026, with shared rooms mostly ₹9,000 to ₹15,000 a month (NoBroker Sion page, 2026). Managed rooms cost more: Zolo lists Sion from ₹11,455 a month (2026).

Western line: Mahim, Prabhadevi and Lower Parel

Matunga Road station brings the Western line within reach, which helps if you've got an internship or coaching on that side. Hostel360 lists 8 places in Mahim (nearest 1.4 km), 8 in Prabhadevi (nearest 2.4 km) and 12 in Lower Parel (nearest 2.9 km). We don't have sourced rent figures for these areas, so ask each PG for the total monthly cost, including electricity, before you compare.

Harbour line: Wadala and King's Circle

Two of our closest listings sit in Wadala, 0.2 km and 1 km from campus, and King's Circle station puts the Harbour line on your doorstep. Students coming from the Chembur side (11 listings, nearest 1.7 km) can use the same line. Wadala falls within the ₹7,000 to ₹20,000 band that NoBroker's Matunga, Sion, Wadala and Dadar pages show for most listings.

Checks before you pay a deposit near Matunga

  • Keep your options open. If you're still hoping for a hostel seat, ask for a month-to-month arrangement or a short notice period so you aren't locked in.
  • Walk the route to the station. A PG's distance from campus matters less than how long it takes to reach Matunga, Matunga Road or King's Circle on foot.
  • Get the full monthly cost in writing. Ask about electricity, deposit, notice period and whether meals are included.
  • Ask who the place is for. Some hostels near campus are run by community trusts or institutions and may have their own eligibility rules. Confirm before you visit.
  • Plan your food budget early. With so few listings offering meals, a tiffin service or cooking arrangement needs to be part of your monthly maths. Our guide to affordable PGs in Mumbai under ₹10,000 covers how students keep the total down.

Girls should read our girls' hostel safety guide for Mumbai before visiting, especially since women-only listings near VJTI are fewer than co-ed ones.

First-year B.Tech hostel applications closed on 10 September 2026, and the merit list was published on 14 September 2026, according to VJTI's notice. Seats are limited and allotted on merit and distance, so if you weren't on the list, start your PG search right away in Dadar, Matunga East and Sion.
Most PG asking rents on NoBroker's Matunga, Sion, Wadala and Dadar pages fall between ₹7,000 and ₹20,000 a month (October 2026). In Sion, NoBroker showed 14 listings with shared rooms mostly ₹9,000 to ₹15,000, and Zolo lists Sion from ₹11,455. These are asking prices, and most nearby PGs don't include food.
Matunga on the Central line is the closest station. Matunga Road on the Western line and King's Circle on the Harbour line are also nearby, and the Aqua Line metro has a station at Dadar. That's why a PG in Sion, Mahim or Wadala can work as well as one in Dadar, as long as it gives you a direct ride.
Supply is thinner for women. As of October 2026, Hostel360 lists 10 women-only PGs and hostels within 3 km of VJTI, against 36 co-ed and 18 men-only places. VJTI runs its own girls' hostels (Blocks A, B and E), but seats are limited, so girls who miss an allotment should start looking early.
