For a PG near KJ Somaiya, start in Vidyavihar and Ghatkopar East, where most shared PGs on NoBroker were asking ₹8,500 to ₹12,000 a month in October 2026, usually without food (NoBroker Vidyavihar, NoBroker Ghatkopar East). That's well under the roughly ₹21,000 a month that a Somaiya hostel triple works out to before mess. As of October 2026, Hostel360 lists 53 PGs and hostels within 3 km of the campus, with the nearest in Ghatkopar and on the Tilak Nagar side of Chembur.

Key Takeaways

  • A 2026-27 triple in Somaiya's Maitreyi or Sandipani hostel costs ₹2,53,651 a year, about ₹21,000 a month, and mess is extra and mandatory.
  • A double costs ₹3,80,499 a year, about ₹31,700 a month before mess.
  • Most shared PGs nearby were asking ₹8,500 to ₹12,000 in Vidyavihar and ₹9,000 to ₹12,000 in Ghatkopar East on NoBroker in October 2026, usually without food.
  • Hostel360 lists 4 places within 1 km, 53 within 3 km and 133 within 5 km of campus (October 2026). 37 of the 53 are co-ed.
  • Somaiya's own site says the walk from Vidyavihar station takes a minimum of fifteen minutes, so judge a PG by its route to the gate, not just to the station.

Somaiya's hostels are big, so why do students still rent PGs?

Capacity isn't the first problem at Somaiya. Its hostel and housing page lists Sandipani for boys (capacity 666), Maitreyi for girls (394), Ashtavakra, a co-ed hostel with twin, triple and dorm rooms (712), and a co-ed Polytechnic hostel with four-sharing rooms. They're open to Somaiya students only, and Maitreyi and Sandipani rooms are allotted first-come-first-served through an online portal.

The real question for most families is price. Somaiya's hostels charge a full year's accommodation up front, and the numbers are higher than many parents expect.

What a hostel room costs in 2026-27

Per Somaiya's Maitreyi admissions page and hostel FAQs (2026-27), accommodation in Maitreyi and Sandipani costs:

  • Triple: ₹2,53,651 a year. In the first year you pay ₹2,85,651, which includes a ₹25,000 hostel deposit, a ₹5,000 mess deposit and ₹2,000 registration.
  • Double: ₹3,80,499 a year, or ₹4,12,499 in the first year.
  • Mess: extra and mandatory, with four meals a day.

Divide the triple rate by 12 and you get about ₹21,000 a month for the room alone. A double works out to about ₹31,700. You may see much lower "from" prices for Somaiya hostels quoted online. Those can be dorm rates, not the triple and double rooms above, so always check which room type a figure refers to.

What PGs near campus are asking

NoBroker's Vidyavihar page had only 4 PG listings in October 2026, ranging from ₹7,500 to ₹40,000, with most between ₹8,500 and ₹12,000. Ghatkopar East had more choice: 22 listings, with shared rooms mostly ₹9,000 to ₹12,000. Managed chains sit higher. Zolo lists Ghatkopar from ₹18,034 and Chembur from ₹11,568 a month (2026).

So a shared PG at the typical asking rent costs roughly half of a hostel triple, but you'll have to sort out your own food. That trade-off, not seat availability, is the real decision for most Somaiya students.

The 15-minute walk: how you'll actually reach the gate

Somaiya's maps and directions page is upfront that the walk from Vidyavihar station takes "a minimum of fifteen minutes." Vidyavihar sits on the Central line between Kurla and Ghatkopar, and from Ghatkopar the campus is about 2 km by auto. So a PG beside Vidyavihar station still leaves you a real walk, while one on the right bus route can be just as quick.

East side: Ghatkopar East and Chembur

The campus is in Vidyavihar East, so PGs on the east side save you from crossing the tracks. Somaiya lists BEST buses 385, 353 and 399 on the east side. Our nearest Chembur listings sit on the Tilak Nagar edge, 0.7 to 1.3 km out, which makes them closer than the Chembur name suggests.

West side: Saki Naka, Andheri East and Powai

On the west side, Somaiya lists buses 322, 323, 433, 308, 336 and 609. Saki Naka and Andheri East together account for 51 of our listings within 5 km, and both are on Metro Line 1, which ends at Ghatkopar. From there you'll still need the auto or bus leg to campus. Powai has 12 listings but no suburban station, so you'd rely on buses or autos every day.

Somaiya-specific checks before you sign

  • Compare like for like. The hostel's ₹21,000 a month is for the room only, with mess on top. For a PG, add food and electricity before you compare.
  • Move fast if you want a hostel seat. Maitreyi and Sandipani allot rooms first-come-first-served, so apply as soon as the portal opens and keep a PG shortlist as backup.
  • Count the deposits. A first-year hostel student pays ₹32,000 in deposits and registration on top of the annual rate. Ask any PG how much its deposit is and when it's refunded.
  • Time the trip. Walk or ride from the PG to the gate at the hour of your first lecture, including the station walk.
  • Girls, start early. We list only 8 women-only places within 3 km. Our girls' hostel safety guide for Mumbai covers what to check on a visit.

The bottom line for Somaiya students

If you get a hostel seat and can afford about ₹21,000 a month plus mess, the zero commute is hard to beat. If not, Ghatkopar East and Vidyavihar give you the shortest trip at roughly half the rent, and Chembur's Tilak Nagar side adds more choice.
