About Shibpur

Shibpur is a Howrah zone directly across the river from central Kolkata, home to IIEST (formerly Bengal Engineering College) and the Botanical Garden. Howrah station is about three kilometres away. PGs draw IIEST students and workers commuting to Howrah's commercial areas. Rents are among the cheapest in the Kolkata metro region. Ferries to Kolkata and buses across Vidyasagar Setu provide commute options. The area is residential and quieter than Howrah proper.

About Kolkata

Kolkata draws a steady stream of students, young professionals and job seekers from across eastern India. The city hosts major universities (Jadavpur, Presidency, Calcutta) alongside IT clusters in Salt Lake Sector V and New Town, and a large services economy spread through its commercial hubs. Coaching centres for competitive exams, medical colleges, and the booming cultural sector all contribute to year-round demand for hostels and PGs. Rental costs in Kolkata remain among the lowest of India's major metros, leaving it accessible for students and early-career workers. PGs with meals are common across south and central Kolkata, while the eastern IT belt offers more co-living and managed-stay options. Prices, commute times, and neighbourhood character vary sharply between the older parts of the city and the planned townships to the east, so choosing the right area matters as much as choosing the right property.

For Jadavpur University students, Jadavpur, Dhakuria, Gariahat, and Tollygunge offer the most PG choices within walking or short bus distance of campus, with rents from ₹3,500 to ₹7,000. For Presidency University and St. Xavier's College, Park Street, Esplanade, Bowbazar, and Taltala are practical. College Street near Calcutta University has the densest cluster of student accommodation in the city.

The Kolkata Metro Blue Line runs north-south from Dakshineswar to Kavi Subhash (New Garia) with 24 stations. The Green Line (East-West) is extending from Howrah Maidan toward Sector V in Salt Lake. Areas near metro stations like Kalighat, Rabindra Sadan, and Dum Dum are well-lit and considered safe. South Kolkata neighbourhoods (Gariahat, Jadavpur, Tollygunge) have strong community presence that adds a layer of safety for women residents.
