Choosing a boys hostel in Mumbai

What differs when you are looking specifically for men-only accommodation in Mumbai.

Choosing a boys hostel in Mumbai

Advisory

Most listings on this page are men-only or co-ed properties across Mumbai. Boys hostels here run leaner than the women-only equivalents (more three- and four-sharing rooms, fewer staffed gates, later or absent curfews) and they price accordingly. Confirm the security, meals and room-sharing arrangement instead of assuming that every quoted rent includes the same services.

The city's rent band is ₹8,000 – ₹27,499 a month. In Andheri, Andheri East, Thane and Goregaon you will find both ends of it on the same street, so compare the room you are actually being shown rather than the photographs: how many beds are in it, whether the rent includes electricity in summer, and whether laundry and housekeeping are billed on top.

We list 184 properties in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Contact goes straight to the operator: no brokerage, no agent, and no fee for using the filter above.

  • Count the beds, then price the room

The same building in Andheri, Andheri East, Thane and Goregaon will quote very different rents for a single, a twin and a four-sharing room. Confirm the occupancy of the specific room you are shown, not the block, and ask whether the operator can move another resident in later without your agreement.

  • Electricity, and the summer bill

The most common surprise in Mumbai is a room advertised inclusive of utilities that meters air-conditioning separately from April onward. Ask whether electricity is included, whether AC rooms are metered, and what a typical peak-month bill came to last year.

  • Entry hours and gate policy

Boys hostels here vary from open 24 hours to a hard 11pm lock. If you work shifts or study late, confirm the gate policy and who holds the key after hours before you pay anything.

  • Deposit terms and the exit notice

Expect one to two months' rent as deposit. Ask in writing what is deducted for wear and repainting, how many days' notice releases it, and whether any part is non-refundable regardless of condition.

  • Food, laundry and housekeeping

Establish whether meals are included or a separate mess subscription, how often rooms and bathrooms are cleaned, and whether laundry is in-house or billed per load. Confirm every recurring charge before you commit.

Hostels & PG in Mumbai

Maharashtra

Mumbai is India's financial capital and its most expensive rental market. The city's PG and hostel demand is driven by a massive working population in banking, finance, media, entertainment, IT and manufacturing spread across South Mumbai, the western suburbs and the eastern corridor. Major institutions like IIT Bombay, TISS, St. Xavier's and Mumbai University add major student demand. The local train network (Western, Central and Harbour lines) defines how most Mumbaikars commute and choose where to live.

PG rents in Mumbai vary enormously by location. South Mumbai and Bandra command the highest prices, while areas along the Central Line like Ghatkopar and Mulund offer better value. Most PGs include meals, and sharing arrangements from twin to four-bed rooms are standard. Access to the nearest railway station is the single most important factor for commuters, even a 10-minute walk difference to the station affects daily convenience. Comparing PGs by their station distance, not just area name, is the most practical approach in Mumbai.

Common questions

Questions about Mumbai

Mumbai rents run ₹8,000 – ₹27,499 a month. Four-sharing rooms without meals sit at the floor of that band; single rooms with food and air-conditioning sit at the top. Confirm the occupancy of the room you are actually shown before comparing prices.

Andheri, Andheri East, Thane and Goregaon hold the largest share, since they sit closest to the colleges and workplaces most residents commute to. Compare the specific room, included services and payment terms before deciding.

It varies more than it does for women-only properties — some run open 24 hours, others lock the gate around 11pm. If you keep late hours, settle the gate policy and who holds the key before you pay.

Often only up to a cap. Air-conditioned rooms are commonly metered separately from April onward, which is the single most frequent billing surprise. Ask what last summer's peak-month bill came to for the room you are being shown.

Andheri (both East and West) has the highest concentration of PGs in Mumbai, serving IT professionals at MIDC and SEEPZ, entertainment industry workers near Lokhandwala, and students at nearby colleges. Vile Parle is the traditional student PG hub near NMIMS, Mithibai, and SNDT. Powai caters to IIT Bombay students and startup professionals near Hiranandani. Borivali and Dahisar offer the most budget-friendly options on the Western Line's northern end.

IIT Bombay students look for PGs in Powai (near Hiranandani Gardens), Chandivali, and Kanjurmarg West — all within 15 minutes of campus. NMIMS and Mithibai students stay in Vile Parle West, Juhu lanes, and Irla, where the long-standing PG culture means dozens of options within walking distance. TISS students (campus on VN Purav Marg near Deonar) search in Chembur, Govandi, and Sion, which are on the Harbour and Central lines.

Extremely important. Mumbai's suburban railway carries over 75 lakh (7.5 million) commuters daily and is the backbone of the city's transport. Being within a 10-minute walk of a Western Line, Central Line, or Harbour Line station lets you reach most work and college locations in 30–45 minutes. Metro Line 1 (Versova–Ghatkopar) and the newer Metro 2A and 7 add east-west and northern connectivity. PGs far from stations depend on auto-rickshaws and buses, which are slower and costlier.

Mumbai receives over 2,500 mm of rain between June and September, and waterlogging is common in low-lying areas like Sion, Hindmata (near Dadar), parts of Andheri East, and Kurla. Check whether the PG is on an upper floor (ground floors risk flooding), whether the building has proper drainage, and whether the nearest station or road is prone to waterlogging. Western Line areas on higher ground (Bandra West, Khar, Santacruz West) tend to handle monsoons better than the eastern suburbs.

Western suburbs (Andheri, Bandra, Vile Parle, Goregaon) are more developed with better nightlife, dining, and entertainment options, but rents are 15–25% higher. Eastern suburbs (Ghatkopar, Vikhroli, Mulund, Thane) offer better value for money with more spacious PGs, and Metro Line 1 now connects Ghatkopar to Andheri in 20 minutes. Choose based on where your office or college is — daily east-west crosstown commutes can add 45–60 minutes each way.
